ABSTRACT This program investigated the causes and active control of combustion driven oscillations in low emissions gas turbines. These oscillations are one of the primary problems encountered in the development of new systems and the availability and maintainability of fielded systems. As a result of this program, significant progress was made in developing capabilities to predict the conditions under which instabilities occur and their amplitudes. In addition, an advanced adaptive, active control system was developed that can rapidly and effectively suppress combustor oscillations. Finally, the results of this program were leveraged in three new programs established with industry that are transitioning the developed technologies and knowledge into instability prediction models and active control capabilities for full scale systems.

Scanned-Wavelength Temperature Sensors for Combustion Instabilities
Motivation Fuel lean combustion is often employed to reduce pollutant emissions (CO, NOx,...) and increase gas turbine lifetime via reduced temperature. However, lean combustion is susceptible to thermoacoustic instabilities and lean blowout (LBO). Thermoacoustic instabilities are due to the coupling of heat release to acoustic oscillations, and lead to reduced combustion efficiency and increas...

During the last decade extensive research has been made at Lund University, Sweden, on a lean premix (prevaporize) combustion concept with burnt gas recirculation and a metallic flame holder. From this concept a new lean premixed natural gas combustion chamber with internal combustion gas recirculation (CGR) has been developed for the V160/SOLO 161 Stirling engines. This combustor has ultra-low...
متن کاملNumerical Study of Reduction of NOx Emission by High Temperature Air Combustion Technology
A numerical study on Nox emission from an industrial furnace utilizing high temperature air combustion (HTAC) technology was done. The basic concept of the regenerative burner including heating a diluting of fresh air by flue gas was implemented in a two-dimensional furnace model. Governing equations in conjunction with a turbulence model and an overall chemistry model were solved using an impl...

The solid residue from wood-based ethanol production has a low ash content and high heating value, making it interesting for combustion applications, e.g. small-scale appliances and gas turbines. Combustion and gasification properties have been studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). Char combustion rate data obtained could be used in combustion s...

However, these other means (e.g., speaker actuation) tend to be bulky, have limited operating range, or have other undesirable side effects. In comparison, liquid fuel modulation is compact, more practical, and can deliver the most energy with the least effort. based control approach recently found to be effective for suppressing combustion instabilities in gas turbines. A control law formulate...
